Virtual Exhibition from Montenegro
Montenegro produced its first postage stamp in Vienna in 1873, and the following year, in 1874, these stamps were introduced into regular circulation. From 1874 to 1913, a total of 15 series of regular (franco) stamps were issued. All regular editions were with the image of King Nikola. Commemorative stamps, which, starting in 1893, marked significant events and jubilees in Montenegrin history were a special type of issue. The first commemorative issue of stamps that Montenegro organized was an issue on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of the Obod printing house.
After the end of the First World War, the participants of the so-called The Christmas Rebellion, an armed uprising against the unification of Montenegro with Serbia, formed a government abroad whose goal was to establish a sovereign Montenegrin state and restore King Nikola Petrović to the throne. Since the Montenegrin emigrant government was recognized by some European countries, with which official correspondence was maintained, it was decided in 1921 to print Montenegrin postage stamps.
On December 15, 2005, Montenegro issued it's own postage stamp, for the first time since 1913.
