Fritillaria meleagris L. is a species of flowering plant in the family Liliaceae. It is commonly known as snake’s head fritillary, chess flower, frog-cup, guinea-hen flower, guinea flower, leper lily, Lazarus bell, chequered lily, chequered daffodil, or drooping tulip. The plant is native to Europe and western Asia and is a bulbous perennial that grows between 15-40 cm in height. The flower has a chequered pattern in shades of purple, or is sometimes pure white. It flowers from March to May and grows in grasslands in damp soils and river meadows at altitudes up to 800m. The button-shaped bulb of the plant is about 2 cm in diameter and contains poisonous alkaloids.
