Castanea sativa Mill. is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae. It is commonly known as sweet chestnut, Spanish chestnut, or chestnut. The plant is native to Southern Europe and Asia Minor and is widely cultivated throughout the temperate world. It is a substantial, long-lived deciduous tree that can grow up to 30-35 meters tall and may also reach a significant girth (up to 12 meters at breast height). The bark is brown-greyish and often has net-shaped venations with deep furrows or fissures. The leaves are opposite, 4-10 cm long, and 2-4 cm broad, with an ovate to oblong shape and an entire margin. The flowers are small, with four yellow petals, produced in clusters of 10-25 together in the late winter (between February and March in the UK), well before the leaves appear. The fruit is an edible seed, the chestnut, which has been used in cooking since ancient times. The fruit is also used in traditional medicine to treat various disorders. The wood of C. sativa is extremely dense and, unlike the wood of most other woody plant species, sinks in water. This density makes it valuable for crafting into tool handles, parts for machines, etc.
