Camellia japonica ‘Alba Plena’, also known as ‘Alba Plena’ or ‘Great White’, is a cultivar of Camellia japonica.

One of the oldest camellias in cultivation and one of the first double camellias introduced in the West. It’s recognizable in Chinese manuscripts as far back as the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.) when it was known as TA PAI (Great White).

This plant is exceptionally care-free if given a well-chosen site. It’s a glorious addition to any garden, adding beautiful early season color. It’s also perfect as a specimen plant and may be effectively grown in tubs or large containers. The flowers contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage of glossy medium-green leaves.

The elegant flowers are happily produced early in the season (October to January in the Northern Hemisphere; March to June in the Southern Hemisphere). Very few camellias are as popular and widely grown as ‘Alba Plena’.
