A drone bee is a male bee that is part of a honey bee colony. Unlike the female worker bee, a drone has no stinger and does not gather nectar or pollen. The drone’s sole purpose is to mate with a virgin queen bee during her nuptial flight. Drones are haploid, meaning they have only one set of chromosomes, and develop from unfertilized eggs. They are characterized by their large eyes and a body size greater than that of worker bees, though usually smaller than the queen bee. The lifespan of a drone bee is relatively short, typically around 55 days. After mating, the drone dies.
