Fauna of Croatia - Freshwater fish

In the member's collection

Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758), commonly known as the common carp, is a large freshwater fish native to Europe and Asia. It has been domesticated for centuries and widely introduced around the world for aquaculture, ornamental purposes (as koi), and recreational fishing.

Carp are highly adaptable and thrive in a wide range of freshwater habitats, including rivers, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, especially in slow or still waters with muddy bottoms. They are omnivorous bottom feeders, consuming plant material, insects, crustaceans, and detritus.

In the Danube River, Cyprinus carpio is a native species and an important part of traditional fisheries and local ecology. However, in regions where it has been introduced, it is often considered invasive due to its tendency to stir up sediments, uproot aquatic plants, and alter ecosystems.

Valued for its hardiness, fast growth, and culinary uses, the common carp remains one of the most economically and culturally significant freshwater fish worldwide.
