Fauna of Croatia - Freshwater fish

In the member's collection

Salmo trutta (Linnaeus, 1758), or brown trout, is a freshwater fish species in the salmon family, native to Europe and western Asia. Known for its adaptability, it lives in rivers, lakes, and coastal seas (as sea trout). It has a golden-brown body with black and red spots and is highly valued in sport fishing for its strength and wariness. Brown trout feed on insects, crustaceans, and small fish.

They are also found in the Danube River, one of Europe’s major waterways, where they inhabit cold, oxygen-rich tributaries and headwaters. In the Danube basin, brown trout are part of a diverse and ecologically significant fish community. Their presence is a sign of good water quality, and they play a key role in maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems. Due to habitat disruption and pollution in parts of the Danube, conservation efforts are important for sustaining healthy populations.
